New Youth Cafe for Bagshot

highst.jpgFollowing a recent local ‘Tune-in Meeting to discuss local issues, Bagshot resident Glyn Carpenter who runs the Wentworth Patisserie, has offered to extend opening hours to make the café available for local youth to use in the evening.

The meeting, organised between Conservative led Surrey County Council and Surrey Heath Borough Council, the local police and other local organisations was convened to discuss a range of issues that concern local Bagshot residents. One observation made was that young people had ‘nowhere to go, and nothing to do in Bagshot in the evenings’.

Glyn immediately volunteered to make the Wentworth Patisserie available as a venue for young people to use, with a Council appointed youth worker to oversee the premises during this time.

Valerie White, a local resident for over 20 years, and an attendee at the meeting said, ‘I have been monitoring the success of the Camberley Youth Cafe and think this is an excellent idea for Bagshot. My thanks go to Glyn Carpenter for giving this project the opportunity to become a reality. I am sure everyone locally will give their wholehearted support to Glyn in this !’

  • Well done Glyn, that’s a real contribution worthy of note. I don’t live in Bagshot but its great to see the effort being put in to keep activity and a sense of life in the villages at this end of Surrey. A great outcome from the Tune In meeting.

  • I also agree that it is a good idea. However, it is a shame that Conservative controlled Surrey County Council closed down the youth provision in Bagshot in the first place. The closure was opposed by many people in the village but their protests were ignored by the county council. It has left the village without any council funded youth facilities for many years

  • Not fair to blame the Council for closing something that didn’t get used Richard..

  • That’s not true.

  • It is true. Camberley News covered the story some time ago – the story is probably still available from their website. The organisers were struggling because no-one turned up.

  • The cafe is good news and we look forward to supporting this. The TUNE-IN event was useful and connected a number of people up.

If you’re interested in youth provision in Bagshot, Lightwater and Windlesham you can find a list at http://www.wvyp.org.uk (all updates very welcome!)
