20MPH High Street Campaign Gains Widespread Support

vhigh.jpgValerie White, local Bagshot resident and Conservative Candidate for this week’s By-Election on Thursday has welcomed the widespread support that she has received for her campaign to reduce the speed limit in Bagshot High Street.

Valerie said, ‘There are very serious concerns about the danger caused by speeding cars in the High Street. Sadly there have been a number of major accidents and fatalities locally in the last few years. Unless we do something my fear is that it’s only a matter of time before someone is killed on the High Street. An enforced 20MPH speed limit is one measure that will help reduce this risk.’

Valerie presented a petition to Surrey County Council some months ago to communicate the strength of local feeling on this issue and has followed it up by sponsoring discussions on the issue at a local ‘Community Panel’ meeting and at a recent ‘Police and Parish’ meeting.

Valerie goes on to say, ‘I have had a lot of support for this issue. I think everyone realises that we must do everything we can to prevent the dangers caused by speeding in Bagshot. If I’m elected to the Borough Council on Thursday then this is an issue that will be top of my agenda for further action.’

  • Good idea – I support it. I see the new Liberal Democrat people have now decided to support this – they have put it on their latest leaflet.

  • I dont object to making the village a 20mph zone (I have young children after all) but in my experience these zones come with masses of bright red and white signs and large sections of orange on the road. I think these look awful and will detract from the ‘village feel’. I’d like to see if the new crossing slows the traffic down first.

  • So what’s happened to the long awaited pedestrian crossing in the High Street; campaigned for, approved and money set aside for it?
A few weeks ago there was a flurry of activity and signs put up indicating flow restrictions and possible temporary closure of the High Street. All that appears to have been done is a bit of re-surfacing and a small extension of the pinch point paving. There are no indications af a pedestrian crossing whatsoever. So where is it?
